NOCO Boost GB40 Jump Starter vs Battery Tender: A Buyer's Checklist

Who should use this checklist

If you're the one signing off on batteries, chargers, or booster packs for a repair shop or fleet, this list is for you. I've handled those orders for six years at an 8-bay independent shop, and I've personally made—and documented—a few expensive mistakes. Add them up and they come to roughly $1,400 in wasted budget.

The question I hear most often is "should we buy a NOCO Boost GB40 jump starter or something from Battery Tender?" It's a fair question. But it usually jumps one step ahead of the actual decision. Below is the checklist I now use, in the order I use it.

1. Write down the actual vehicles that need to start

Before looking at any product page, list every vehicle. Include the engine size, gas or diesel, and whether it's 12V. Sounds basic, but most buyers skip it because they're thinking about "the van" or "the average car."

Our list includes five service vans with gas V8s, one diesel van with a 6.0L engine, and the usual lineup of customer cars. That changes the answer. Battery Tender is known for plug-in chargers and maintainers, and honestly, that's their home turf. Those units are for vehicles that sit parked and slowly lose battery voltage. A jump starter like the NOCO Boost GB40 solves a different problem: the battery is dead right now, and you need to get moving.

At our shop, the split is simple:

  • Service trucks and road calls carry a boost pack. There's no wall outlet on the shoulder of the highway.
  • Vehicles that will sit for more than two weeks in our lot go on a maintainer or smart charger. We have a few older Battery Tender units that still do that job fine.

So when a shop owner asks me "NOCO or Battery Tender?," I ask what the vehicle does on a Tuesday morning. If it needs to start a dead truck, they need a boost pack. 3. Check the clamps before you trust the peak amp number

If your fleet is all small gasoline vehicles, a smaller unit may be enough. Size to the vehicle list first, then size to the number of people who'll fight over it.

5. Date every unit and recharge it every 90 days

This is the step everyone skips, and it's the one that stranded us.

Boost packs lose charge sitting in a toolbox. The internal management system draws a little power, and cold weather makes it worse. I still kick myself for the February morning when every pack we owned was dead because no one had charged them since September.

Now each unit gets a sticker with a "next charge" month. First week of every quarter, we charge and test every pack in the building. It takes fifteen minutes and has prevented more than one tow call.

6. Add up the total price, not the sticker price

I'm biased here: I'd rather see every cost upfront than get a low price and pay the difference later. 7. Ask the technician who will actually use it

The last check is the one I ignored the longest. Buyers pick equipment, then hand it to a technician who had no say.

Now we do a test week before standardizing. We gave two of our road techs a NOCO Boost GB40 and told them to use it on their next dead vehicle. They both came back saying the same thing: it's fast and it doesn't fight you. The next order was for five more.

Also decide where it lives. A boost pack that stays in the warehouse won't help a truck three miles away. Every service vehicle in our fleet has a designated spot for its pack. If there's no spot, the pack won't be there when it's needed.

Mistakes I still see shops make

  • Comparing jump starters to maintainers as if they do the same job.
  • Buying one big pack for ten techs.

I won't tell you one brand wins every scenario. I will tell you this: the checklist above has saved us more money than any brand loyalty ever did. Match the tool to the job, check the clamps, date the unit, and ask the person holding it. That's the whole secret.
